My name is Martin Thseira, Malacca Portuguese (Kristang) grew up in Praya Lane. Salted-fish, mango bumbling, fish-roe picked condiment recipes passed down from one generation to the next. Keeping these recipes alive is one of the ways of counting my Portuguese Eurasian Heritage and legacy.
Some back story about me, I am a Malacca Portuguese (Kristang) descendant and I had a enjoyable life in the kampung Praya Lane. This place was once a vibrant fishing village until our seafront was reclaimed in 1984. Back then, everyday you can see kids swimming, catching tiny fishes by the shore. If the tide was low, we used to find seashells, sometimes even Kupang or Mussle, all these to get some money. Ah… the good old days. I was fishing for over 20 years but have to give up fishing during and after the reclamation reached Praya Lane, also know as Banda Hilir, then I went into pickle making and the rest is history.
Another way to help preserves Kristang (the language) can join my sing along session or maybe revive Praya Lane is simply join my Virtual Experience: Tribute to Praya Lane, Melaka and pass down the stories, the good and bad, happiness and hardship, during the virtual session we will have a virtual tea-session with a special guest of mine who is still living in a 100-year-old residential property, you don’t want to miss that!
